Data Science in Government
CALL FOR SUBMISSION
The "Project Showcases - Data Science in Government" - Project is now open for applications!
​
Ministries of Foreign Affairs and other government institutions as well as multilateral organizations, development agencies, civil society organizations and academia are invited to share their groundbreaking projects and activities that utilize data science in the government context, such as foreign policy, negotiations, mediation, crisis preparedness, climate action, and more.​​
​
The submission deadline is 31 May 2025, with proposals being reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis until then. Submitters will be informed of the selection outcome and next steps within two weeks of submission. After the application is confirmed, participants will be invited to submit a 10-minute video showcasing their Data Science in Government Project. The selected projects will be featured on our website and YouTube channel, contributing to an open-access repository designed to inspire others and promote innovative solutions globally.​

To see examples of showcased projects visit presentations from participants of the Inaugural Foreign Policy and AI Forum 2024. These projects reflect a diverse range of creative applications of data science in addressing complex global challenges in MFAs and beyond.
How to Apply?
Submit your proposal with the following details:

Title: The name of your project.

Project Description: A brief overview (100–200 words) that includes:

What the project is about.

How data science was utilized in its implementation.

Key outcomes, lessons learned, and opportunities for scaling or replication.

Implementing Organization: Name and details of the submitting organization responsible for implementing the project.

Each project will be showcased in a pre-recorded format.

Presentations should be up to 10 minutes long and delivered using PowerPoint

Lessons learned, highlighting both successes and challenges.

Red Dot Foundation (Safecity) and Haryana Police have joined forces to pioneer a data-driven approach to women's safety. Through crowdsourced reporting and anonymized data analysis, the initiative identifies unsafe public spaces and supports gender-sensitive policing. This collaboration fosters community trust, informs targeted interventions, and enables evidence-based policy reform - making cities safer for women and girls.

Discover MONITO, the educational monitoring platform developed by Mexicanos Primero to strengthen transparency and decision-making in Mexico’s education system. By organizing key data on educational authorities, programs, and indicators across federal and state levels, MONITO makes information accessible to policymakers, civil society, and the public. Since its launch in January 2025, it has helped push for overdue government actions and has become a key tool for promoting open data and informed public debate on education.
Projects Showcased at the Foreign Policy & AI Forum 2024
Check out the Project Showcase "Data Science at the German FFO – Social Media Monitoring in the StratCom Unit", presented by Christoph Pfeufer, Data Scientist at the German Federal Foreign Office. This session offers insights into how the StratCom Unit leverages AI for social media monitoring, utilizing time series analysis and visualization techniques.
This Project Showcase on "Data Science at the Estonian Government - Virtual AI Assistant" was presented by Allar Laaneleht, AI/Bürokratt Service Project Manager at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications of Estonia. He shared first-hand insights on how Estonia’s innovative virtual AI assistant is being efficiently integrated into government operations to enhance public services and streamline communication.

This presentation provides practical insights how AI is utilized to assist policy officers in summarizing complex documents and navigating intricate negotiations, featuring the United Nations Global Digital Compact as a key case study.
This Project Showcase was presented by Ayham Al Maleh, Information Management Officer, Information Management Unit (IMU), Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO) at United Nations. His presentation provided first-hand insights into how the United Nations leverages data to enhance peace and security efforts worldwide.
The Project Showcase "Data Science at the BMZ: Quantifier - How LLMs reliably extract ratings from text" was presented by Parham Kouloubandi, Senior Policy Officer, Data Lab, German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). In his presentation he introduced a prototype leveraging multiple models to extract ratings from text, e.g., political markers from project descriptions.
The Project Showcase "Data Science at the Government of Kenya: Conservation & Scale - Leveraging Data and AI for Climate Action in Africa" was presented by Munyala Mwalo, Design Director at the Emerging Technologies Institute & Action Lab Africa, Office of the Special Envoy on Technology for Kenya, Executive Office of the President. This session offers first-hand insights into how AI- and data-driven governance is advancing sustainable climate action in Kenya.
